Cusseta, January 28th, 1798. Sir: The females of this nation approve much of Colonel Hawkins's plan of introducing the culture of cotton and the spinning wheel; it may, in the course of a few years, induce the young men to throw away the hungary flute. They all appear satisfied with the Colonel's orders for the factor to purchase such articles as they have to dispose of, and if proper encouragement is given, a few years may transmiogrify a nation of hunters into fanners. When the females are able to cloathe themselves by their own industry, it will render them independent of the hunter, who in turn will be obliged to handle the ax & the plough, and assist the women in the laborious task of the fields, or have no wife. This the men already begin to perceive, which makes them backwards to encourage what will in time be for their mutual benefit. I enclose you a letter for Colonel Hawkins and one for Mr. Barnard, who I expect is with you. I have heard nothing lately from the west ward, and this is a barren country for news. I was informed that the Cowetas intended turning out to-morrow to take satisfaction, but it is probable they will wait until they hear from Colonel Hawkins. Accept of my best wishes for your health and prosperity, and I remain, with due respect, Your most obedient honourable servant, RICHARD THOMAS.
