Proverbs 31:27
“She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.” More here. FRUGALITY IN THE KITCHEN:
I have always been taught that potatoes, rice, cornbread, biscuits, and the like are fillers...For when we want to ration the meat, mainly. A big pan of biscuits go a long way, are virtually cost-free, and fill up hungry hard-working men and active hungry children. Add butter and honey or jam or preserves, and you have "dessert" as well! I know these are very traditional and may even seem a little too old fashioned for some of you, but it worked for our parents and grandparents, so why not us? SEE: Entrees We do try to use more nutritious grains, breads, etc. for this concept as well, and they are inexpensive compared to buying or using double servings of meats, for example. (I have different thoughts now.) Most grains can be bought in bulk (cheaper) and stored dry, or even frozen, such as millet, bulgar, flours, cornmeal, beans, rice, etc. SEE: Cornbread Summertime is the peak season for fresh fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices, at U-Pick Farms, fruit stands, farmer's market, roadside vendors, etc. AND SEE: Gardening And as I've mentioned before, u-pick farms...And as we get into late summer/early fall there will also be "pecans", and other seasonal things like root vegetables, potatoes, apples, pears, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, etc. at lower prices, to consider stock piling…SEE: Food Storage. As well as, CANNING and FREEZING Proverbs 6:6-8 6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. If you have freezer space, storage space, and canning equipment this is the prime time for "putting up" field peas, butterbeans, tomatoes, corn, okra, etc. for use during the wintertime. Also canning green beans, tomato based sauces, salsa, relishes, jams, jellies, preserves, juices, etc. SEE: Canning and Freezing I know some of these ideas are just not feasible with some of you, but finding bargain sales and buying double or triple quantities, would work to save money, stocking up the pantry, etc. SEE: Pantry Salvage stores have good bargains on canned foods, even frozen foods, at very reasonable prices, sometimes way below the cost at regular grocery stores...and the quality is just as good, and there are usually more brands to choose from, and different types of foods available than at the regular stores. Look online or in the phonebook for “Salvage Grocery Stores”. And look for marked down groceries, cart clearance items, meat sale items at the regular grocery stores.
